The basic rPS process is registered as a \u201cNovel Technology\u201d under the new EU Regulation 2022-1616 on recycled materials.<br \/>\n[\/vc_column_text][\/vc_column_inner][\/vc_row_inner][vc_row_inner][vc_column_inner width=&#8221;1\/3&#8243;][vc_single_image image=&#8221;9549&#8243; img_size=&#8221;full&#8221; css=&#8221;&#8221;][\/vc_column_inner][vc_column_inner width=&#8221;2\/3&#8243;][vc_column_text css=&#8221;&#8221;]<br \/>\nFernholz Verpackungen promotes the use of rPS from household-based collection programmes to develop a comprehensive recycling system. PS recycling reaches an even more complex stage with rPS 3.0.<br \/>\n[\/vc_column_text][\/vc_column_inner][\/vc_row_inner][\/vc_column][vc_column width=&#8221;3\/5&#8243;][vc_row_inner css=&#8221;.vc_custom_1784538612566{padding-bottom: 15px !important;}&#8221;][vc_column_inner width=&#8221;1\/3&#8243;][vc_single_image image=&#8221;9551&#8243; img_size=&#8221;full&#8221; css=&#8221;&#8221;][\/vc_column_inner][vc_column_inner width=&#8221;2\/3&#8243;][vc_column_text css=&#8221;&#8221;]<br \/>\nIn March 2026, the basic recycling process for polystyrene (rPS) developed by Fernholz Verpackungen was included in the new European Union \u201cUnion Register of novel technologies\u201d. This register lists innovative plastic recycling processes for food packaging that have not yet been fully assessed by the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA), but which make an important contribution to the development of sustainable packaging solutions.<\/p>\n<p>In May, Fernholz Verpackungen, ALDI Einkauf SE &amp; Co. oHG and the ZOTT dairy received the Plastics Recycling Awards Europe (PRSE Award) in the Product Technology Innovation category. What makes the joint Milsani Topi rPS Dairy Cup project so special is the use of FFS (Form-Fill-Seal) film \u2013 which is made from rPS.<br \/>\n[\/vc_column_text][\/vc_column_inner][\/vc_row_inner][vc_row_inner][vc_column_inner width=&#8221;1\/3&#8243;][vc_single_image image=&#8221;9552&#8243; img_size=&#8221;full&#8221; alignment=&#8221;right&#8221; css=&#8221;&#8221;][\/vc_column_inner][vc_column_inner width=&#8221;2\/3&#8243; css=&#8221;.vc_custom_1785249390652{padding-top: 25px !important;padding-right: 15px !important;padding-bottom: 15px !important;padding-left: 15px !important;background-color: #F9D1002E !important;}&#8221;][vc_column_text css=&#8221;&#8221;]<\/p>\n<h2 style=\"color: #f9d100;\">Outlook<\/h2>\n<p>Fernholz Verpackungen anticipates rPS consumption of around 2,000 metric tonnes. This corresponds to a recyclate content of at least 10% based on a total volume of approximately 20,000 metric tonnes of film, which we will be bringing to market.<\/p>\n<p>In addition, Fernholz Verpackungen is hoping to obtain a positive assessment of the novel technology from EFSA. The next step will be to seek approval for this technology from the European Commission in order to establish rPS as a \u201cbusiness at scale\u201d.
